🛣️ Driving in El Salvador: The basics

El Salvador drives on the right side of the road, as in most of Europe, the United States, and Canada. The road network is steadily improving, with toll highways connecting major cities. However, driving can be chaotic in urban areas — maintaining safe distances, caution at intersections, and awareness of motorcycles and buses are essential.

🚦 Speed Limits (Art. 145 of the Traffic Regulation)

⚠️ Local signs always override general limits. Pay close attention to road signs, especially in San Salvador where speed cameras exist.

🍺 Drink Driving

The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05% (0.5 g/L). Exceeding this is a serious offense subject to license suspension and criminal prosecution. In practice: zero drinks if you drive — enforcement is strict.

  • 📄 Vehicle registration card (tarjeta de circulación)
  • 🔢 Visible license plates
  • 🌍 For foreigners: valid foreign license + passport

📵 Phone use while driving

Using a phone while driving (texting, calls without hands-free) is strictly prohibited and carries a fine. Use a phone mount or Bluetooth.

⛽ Fuel & Tolls

The most common gas stations are Texaco, Puma, and Esso. Fuel is sold by the liter and attendants pump for you. Average gasoline price (octane 95): approximately $1.01 USD/liter (August 2025). City stations generally accept credit cards; in rural areas, carry cash in USD.

Major highways have toll booths. Fees are very affordable, usually under $2 USD per passage. Toll booths only accept cash in USD — keep small bills handy.

🌙 Practical Safety Tips

  • 🌑 Avoid driving at night outside cities: street lighting is often absent and roads can be unsafe
  • ⛰️ Caution on mountain and coastal roads: sharp turns, steep slopes, landslide risk in rainy season
  • 📍 GPS recommended: signage can be sparse in rural areas. Google Maps and Waze work well. Download offline maps
  • 🚌 Watch out for motorcycles and buses: they are numerous and unpredictable
  • 🛡️ Drive defensively: maintain distance, anticipate unpredictable behavior especially in San Salvador
  • 🔒 Never leave valuables visible in a parked car, especially in urban areas

🚗 Car Rental

Major international agencies (Hertz, Budget, Alamo) operate at the international airport and in San Salvador. Most require a credit card for the security deposit. Minimum age is generally 21–25 depending on the agency. Your European or US license is valid for the duration of your stay (up to 90 days).
