🤿 Diving in El Salvador: A Unique Experience

El Salvador offers extraordinary diving experiences: Pacific coral reef, volcanic crater lakes with underwater hot springs, and historic shipwrecks. If it is not the Caribbean, that is precisely what makes diving here so special!

📍 The 3 Main Diving Sites

1. Lake Ilopango ⭐ (Most Popular)

Dive in an active volcano? It is possible at Lake Ilopango, a volcanic caldera just 16 km from San Salvador. It is the country's most popular diving site.

  • Surface: 72 km²
  • Max depth: 248 m
  • Temperature: 26-30°C depending on season
  • Visibility: 1-6 m (best in dry season)

Diving sites at Ilopango:

  • Los Fumaroles: The flagship site! Volcanic fumaroles where hot water springs from cracks in the bottom. Sulfur deposits, lava formations. Unique experience in the world.
  • Christ the Redeemer: Submerged statue at ~30 m near Los Quemados island, replica of Rio de Janeiro's. Ideal for deep diving.
  • Black Hole: Spectacular underwater volcanic cliffs
  • Cerro Los Quemados: Island tour, rock formations

Particularities:

  • Marked thermocline around 12-15 m
  • Freshwater sponges, pillow lava formations
  • Dry season: clearer water, dead algae
  • Rainy season: murky surface water but clear under thermocline

Season: Year-round (best visibility in dry season Nov-April)

2. Los Cóbanos (Pacific Ocean)

Los Cóbanos hosts the largest coral reef in northern Central America's Pacific. Protected natural area of 264 km² since 2007.

3. Lake Coatepeque

Another volcanic caldera near Santa Ana, less frequented than Ilopango but equally spectacular.

Characteristics:

  • Altitude: 745 m
  • Surface: 25 km²
  • Max depth: 115 m
  • Island: Isla del Cerro (Teopán)

Advantages:

For Snorkeling

  • Bring your equipment: Mask, snorkel, fins (rental possible but variable quality)
