Traditional Drinks of El Salvador

Mayan heritage and Spanish influences have created unique beverages. Each drink awaits you in the markets, pupuserias and restaurants throughout the country.

1. Horchata de Morro

The national drink prepared with morro seeds, peanuts, sesame, cocoa, squash, rice, cinnamon and vanilla. Available as powder ($1) or fresh in pupuserias ($1-2 per glass). Creamy, nutty and spicy flavor.

2. Agua de Jamaica

Red hibiscus infusion with dried flowers, sugar and lemon. Tart taste reminiscent of cranberry, rich in antioxidants and vitamin C. Cost: $0.50-1.50 per glass.

3. Fresco de Ensalada

Fruit beverage (pineapple, apples, mango, oranges, cashew fruit) with lettuce. Served with spoon and straw. Price: $1-2 at patron saint festivals.

4. Atol de Elote

Traditional preparation with fresh corn, milk, sugar and cinnamon. Served hot in the afternoon ($0.50-1.50), accompanied by tamales.

5. Chilate

Mayan beverage without sugar made from nixtamalized corn flour, ginger and chili. Consumed in chilaterias ($0.50-1).

6. Kolashanpan

Orange soda created in 1950-60 with vanilla-cream flavor. Available everywhere ($0.75-1.50). Slogan: "El sabor de El Salvador"

7. Fresco de Chan

Strawberry lemonade with chia seeds. Pink with visible seeds ($0.75-1.50).

8. Fresco de Cebada

Pink beverage with strawberry essences and spices ($0.50-1).

9. Charamuscas

Frozen smoothies in bags, perfect for enjoying while walking ($0.25-0.75).

Visitor Tips

Buy ingredients in the morning at markets; check local schedules to enjoy atol and chilate in the afternoon; look for stands frequented by local residents.
